Like Father Like Son… 46 Years After His Father Was President, Nana Akufo-Addo Is Ghanaian President-Elect – Like father like son… 46 years after, Nana Akufo-Addo walks in his father’s shoes as the soon-to-be-president of Ghana.

Winning after losing out previously in 2008 and 2012 presidential elections was an amazing feat. More than that, the Ghanaian president-elect on his victory made a significant history as his father had once been the president of the gold-rich nation.

In 1947, his father, Edward became one of the founding members of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC). He and other members of the “Big Six” leaders of UGCC- Ebenezer Ako-Adjei, Joseph Boakye Danquah, Kwame Nkrumah, Emmanuel Obetsebi-Lamptey and William Ofori Atta, fought for Ghana’s independence.

Edward was born on 26 June 1906 and died on 17 July 1979. He was a prominent Ghanaian politician and lawyer.

Akufo-Addo was a member of the Gold Coast Legislative Council and the Coussey Constitutional Commission from 1949 to 1950.

Just like he was a prominent figure in his days, Nana Akufo-Addo has been a notable personality in Ghanaian government and politics. He is a lawyer like his father was.

While his father was the Chief Justice at some point, Nana was the Attorney General from 2001-2003. After that he became the Minister for Foreign Affairs.

Under the New Patriotic Party (NPP), he ran for presidency against Atta Mills in 2008 and John Dramani Mahama in 2012. He lost the elections consecutively.

With the same tenacity with which his father fought for the nation’s independence, Nana refused to give up. For the 3rd time, he became the NPP flag bearer for the 2016 elections. Thus, his recent emergence as the president-elect of Ghana with 54% of the votes.

Nana Akufo-Addo will be sworn in as the 5th President of the 4th Republic on 7 January 2017.
